Sensory Classroom Core Word Programme
The Sensory Classroom Core Word Programme is a structured communication and literacy approach designed to support learners with SEND, including autistic learners, AAC users, non-speaking and minimally speaking children, and those with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD). The programme focuses on teaching high-frequency core words through engaging, repetitive, and meaningful activities.
Each week learners explore one or two core words using a range of strategies, including AAC modelling, signing, songs, stories, sensory play, interactive games, and practical communication opportunities. The programme is designed to promote functional communication, increase language understanding, and support literacy development through consistent exposure to vocabulary that can be used across many situations.
By providing repeated opportunities to see, hear, sign, and use core words, the programme helps learners develop confidence, independence, and meaningful communication skills. It also encourages consistency between school, home, and therapy environments, supporting the generalisation of language skills across different contextsFor more information and examples of the Core Word programme in actions, follow:
