Kingfishers

In Kingfishers class we cover a variety of exciting topics across the year. Through our work in all the subject areas we try to make learning as fun and motivating as possible. The children enjoy learning through a multisensory approach. They enjoy taking part in lots of sensory activities, art activities, music and learning through collaborative play, as well as the more formal aspects of developing reading, writing and maths skills. All activities are differentiated to suit each child’s level of development and needs. Alongside the curriculum we also take part in sessions based on: speech and communication, personal skills, social interaction, intensive interaction and time in our sensory room and Cubbie. We love visiting the Cubbie as this helps us to relegate our emotions in an engaging way. In Kingfishers class, we help to promote the children’s communication through a total communication approach, assist the children to create social connections and friendships, learn how to follow school and social rules and we look to develop each child’s independent skills as much as possible. During the Spring Term our topic is ‘Space’. We have been engaging with a variety of books on the topic in English whilst developing our phonics knowledge with a sound of the week. In Maths, we have focused on concepts such as understanding number, addition, subtraction, comparison and measure, position and time and shape. Through our creative curriculum we have participated in a variety of activities that have taught us about important people, transport to and in space, light and dark, creative tasks in Art and DT and sensory experiences too! We are looking forward to learning all about Chinese New Year when we come back after the half term break.
