Hedgehogs

Hedgehogs is a small class for up to 8 pupils  (years 3 to 6) with a high staff ratio and a strong focus on nurture and communication . Pupils have opportunities to follow an informal curriculum with the focus being on routine and the use of sensory rich but not over sensitising activities to support learning.

Daily Attention Autism sessions encourage pupils To “attend” to an activity for longer periods Of time, with a focus on sharing and learning to take turns with their peers. .

A total communication approach is taken to support all learners build their ability to communicate in the way that works best for them. This may be PECS, Communication Boards, strategies provided by SALT, AAC devices supported with Makaton and our Core Word of the week.

When opportunities present we take our learning outside and participate in learning in the environment and our local community.   This gives the class the opportunity to connect with nature and learn skills that are important for the real world . (Visiting shops, exchanging money for items, road safety and a host of other invaluable life skills)

Children feel supported and cared for whilst we help them build their independence and develop their life skills. We make sure we achieve this with plenty of fun, laughter and, a low demand approach in a nurturing way.

Class staff – Miss Brown, Miss Gilbert and Miss Brain ensure the children feel supported, cared for and listened to.

A daily class update is provided on our Class Page on WEDUC and updates throughout the week in any incidents of particular note .

We ask that parents communicate through WEDUC but remind parents that this application is not checked throughout the day while teaching is happening.  Anything of an urgent nature should be shared with our office staff who will relay the information to class staff.
